Math Is More Than It All Demands Analytical Thinking

From finding the derivative of an equation to observing the blueprints of the building you work in, math’s everywhere and it all demands analytical thinking. The human brain loves simplicity and writing is just the opposite; a powerful tool in its most complex form. It allows letters to form words to form pictures in a reader’s mind. Throughout the years, I’ve realized math is more than just numbers, writing is more than words, science is more than the facts, and history is more than just dates. The realization and the admiration of the four core subjects school has to offer has allowed me to succeed in every classroom and in life. Growing up, I sat in the back of the class, barely speaking a word to anyone. Though I seemed to lack the confidence gene, I excelled on my own. My work spoke for me. My mom always tells me how I’d come home from first grade and I’d immediately sit at the kitchen table and finish my homework before dinner. I did that every day after school until graduation. School requires hard work, especially when it came to physics and calculus, but I enjoyed the challenge. I never feared asking for help. Because of that, I managed to take every advanced placement class available to me and appear on the honor roll every year. My strong efforts resulted winning several awards. Sophomore year, I appeared in the United States Achievement Academy National Language Arts Award. I realized hard work pays off and branching out will lead to much more. A Wilderness so Immense by John Kukla explores the events leading up to and the enduring effects of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Kukla begins his story almost twenty years before Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory from France and analyzes how factors ranging from major revolutions to personal relationships all culminated to make the most famous land acquisition in American history possible. He argues that the Louisiana Purchase was not only a case a good luck on Jefferson’s part or solely the result of Napoleon’s failed caribbean ambitions, as some historians that came before him argued. Rather, Kukla explains that the roots of American expansionism are older than the republic itself. Overall, Kukla does not seem to believe that the United States was destined to expand into the Louisiana Territory in that he does not think it was unavoidable or would that it happened without any real, direct actions from the American government. Indeed, he explicitly states in the very first chapter that although Jefferson felt that â€Å"Americans would inevitably force Spain to surrender her provinces,† the president â€Å"quietly [did] everything in his power† to bring that inevitability to pass (Kukla 20). Throughout the book, however, Kukla constantly highlights coincidences and refers to historical events as fated and destined. While Kukla, who often demonstrates a love of wordplay, is most likely referring to the language surrounding the Louisiana Purchase and westward expansion (manifest destiny in particular), his interpretation sometimes risks appearing to be teleological. While the book is not a traditional, academic history text, academics seem to have almost universally agreed as to where it fits in the historiography of the Louisiana Purchase. Veto of the Massively Road Bill(1830) Andrew Jackson vetoed the bill to use federal funds to build a road connecting Lexington and Massively Kentucky. Another issue demonstrating democratic intentions, but an undemocratic execution, was the removal of Native Americans from their homes.Jackson made their removal sound democratic by saying Americans needed to help these people before they became extinct, and they would do so by pushing them west into a land for just them (Doc 8). In 1830, Jackson secured the passage of the Indian Removal Act, which authorized him to exchange public lands in the west for Indian territories in the east. Indians from all over southeastern America were forced into the Indian Territory, which is today known as Oklahoma (Doc 10). The Cherokee Indians were forcibly removed to he new Indian Territory, and their journey is known today as the Trail of Tears.More than 8000 died in this tragic movement. Both the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears sparked anger in Native Americans. Native Americans felt they were being treated unfairly, because they were being pushed off their own land and felt they had a right to stay without any interruptions (Doc 9). While Native Americans clearly saw this as undemocratic, white Americans benefited from their removal and gained land, causing them to see the Native Americans removal as very democratic.The spoils system used by Jackson, was another idea that had very democratic intentions to it, however, once in use it was not as democratic as it was proposed to be. Jackson felt that the duties of the public officers were so plain and simple than any average man could perform them. He felt that every four years the cabinet should be reappointed along with new presidency (Doc 6). Some saw this as very democratic, because it seemed Jackson was simply trying to give all people a chance, by saying anyone can handle these duties.Others, however, saw it as undemocratic and said he simply wanted his own chosen people and supporters around him. Martin Van Burden, Secretary of State, offered Jackson advice against the Jacksons chosen appointment of Samuel Squawroot, who had criminal tendencies. However, Jackson ignored him, and Squawroot absconded with over one million dollars (Doc 7). Jackson was so concerned with having supporters as his public officers that he didnt listen to other advice and consider what they said, which was rather undemocratic. Jackson had campaigned from 1824 to 1 828 by telling the people he would listen to them and do their will. During his presidency, he dealt with many issues; some democratically and some more undemocratically. Most of the matters during his presidency he had to carry out started with the most democratic intentions, however once put in place, their results indirectly became more undemocratic. Although, the individual issues did not always have the democratic results Jackson hoped for, overall he did start the country on a path to democracy.
